The new semester has started at the Robotics College.

At the opening ceremony held in the Kandó Kálmán Dormitory, the Robotic Technology Student College was also represented, where we had the opportunity to present our plans and share our ideas for the upcoming semester. During the program, we listened to inspiring talks from young researchers and professionals who have achieved outstanding results in various scientific fields. For us, it was especially motivating to see how research, technology, and even art can be connected. The Pecha Kucha presentations between the student colleges provided an excellent opportunity to showcase our robotics projects and community goals in a creative way. The evening concluded with informal conversations and new connections, which will certainly lead to exciting collaborations in the future. For the Robotic Technology Student College, the opening ceremony was not only a festive occasion, but also the beginning of a new semester full of opportunities.

Special College Day 2025

On April 10, 2025, the traditional Special College Day of Obuda University was held in the BOSCH room of the Kandó Kálmán College. The event generated significant interest, attracting many students and professionals to engaging lectures and programs.

The event began with a brief opening, which was followed by presentations from the OU colleges. The students gained interesting insights into the activities, projects, and community life of the university’s colleges.

One of the day’s highlights was an emphasized presentation entitled “Us and AI – Artificial Intelligence as Reflected in Professions,” which summarized how AI transforms various fields.

The workshop hosted by the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry, titled “Coded Future – A Dialogue between Students and Entrepreneurs in the Age of AI,” was also a great success. During the interactive discussion, the participants engaged in valuable dialogue about the future challenges and opportunities of AI technologies.

The evening concluded with a raffle, pizza dinner, and pleasant networking. According to the participants, the event provided an excellent opportunity for building connections and expanding professional knowledge, all taking place in a fantastic atmosphere and with great enthusiasm.

Visit to the laboratories of the AMK

The members of the Robotics Special College visited the robot labs of the Alba Régia Faculty of Obuda University, launching the Robot Safari series of events. During the event, the participants were welcomed by Dr. Károly Széll, Associate Professor and Bálint Farkas, Institute Engineer and Euroskills 2024 silver medallist. After the laboratory demonstrations, the students were introduced to the training opportunities of the Alba Regia Faculty, and then each participant introduced themselves and presented their professional activities.

An important part of the meeting was to explore opportunities for cooperation, as new professional relationships were established along common interests. The Robot Safari will continue in the future, and in the coming semesters, further robot labs at Obuda University will be added, providing students with the opportunity to learn about the latest technologies and research areas.

Fundamentals of Control in Robotics course for secondary school students

Thematics

The first robots used in manufacturing were (and in some cases still are) “dumb”, sensorless and unintelligent automatons, i.e. they could only repeat the same sequence of operations, regardless of whether the purpose of the operation they were programmed to perform was achieved or not (e.g. such a ‘dumb’ robot will try to pick up and put the workpiece or package on the conveyor belt even if it is not there). The intelligence of robots was started by using various control algorithms implemented in the robot’s control circuitry or written on the control computers. A controller or control algorithm uses the robot’s evaluators to continuously monitor whether the expected goal or desired value has been achieved, and if it detects a deviation from the expected value, the robot immediately intervenes to immediately minimise the deviation between the desired and achieved value.

The generalised principle of control (observing the deviation from the expected value and intervening to eliminate or compensate for the deviation) is used in many fields besides robotics: for example, a hovering drone or quadrocopter that monitors an area remains stationary even if the wind is blowing, because it detects if it starts to drift using its GPS positioning sensor, and immediately compensates for the deviation between the desired and measured position by changing the rotation speed of the rotors.

The most common of the regulations used in practice is tin. PID (proportional-integrating-differentiating) controller, whose software implementation is very simple, it can be written in Python or even in graphical, simplified, Scratch-based development environments with 5-6 lines of code and instructions.

The aim of our course is to give students an understanding of the principle and importance of control using LEGO Educational Spike Prime building sets, while they build, program and test the “intelligently” controlled robot themselves.

From 29 to 30 August 2024, the BMSZC Verebély László Technikum hosted the Robotics Special College’s mini-course “Fundamentals of Controls in Robotics”. On the first day, the students were introduced to the programming environment of the LEGO Spike Prime Educational kits provided by ROSZ, and then, using a simple program cycle and the knowledge they had acquired about proportional control, they built a tricycle mobile robot that could maintain the desired distance from an obstacle in front of it or “resist” rotation and always stop at the same angular position around the vertical axis. On the second day, the students were also introduced (in a simplified way and adapted to their level of preparedness) to integrating and differentiating control feedback, and based on this they built a robot balancing on two wheels. The course was attended by 20 students, mixed from grades 9-10-11-12.

Balluff Elektronika Kft. factory visit

Antal Bejczy Intelligent Robotics Centre visit 2024.03.25

On 25 March 2024, students of the “Automation II” course took part in an off-site laboratory activity at the Antal Bejczy Intelligent Robotics Centre of the Obuda University (organised by the Robotics Special College), where they could, among other things, try out the da Vinci surgical manipulator, control the Centre’s robot dog and humanoid robot-guide assistant, and learn how robots can help in the rapid sorting and cataloguing of human tissue samples.
